Chaves is a Portuguese municipality located in the northern region of Portugal. The Municipality of Chaves is the main and the largest of the municipalities that compose the sub-region of Alto Támega, abutting the north by the region of Galicia (Spain). It covers an area of 591.28 square kilometers, consisting of 39 parishes, where there are approximately 42 000 inhabitants mainly concentrated in the city of the same name. Despite its importance as an average city in the context of its sub-region, Chaves is a municipality with strong agricultural character and mountain.
The Támega river, originating in Spain, and its valley define the geomorphology of the territory and landscape where green contrasts with the various colors of farmland. This depression, which originated from a tectonic fracture that extends from the northern to central Portugal, gave rise to various sources of natural mineral waters, which convert Chaves as thermal referent. From the existing aquifers, emerge mineral water springs of unparalleled quality, recognized due to its use, either bottled as the recognized mineral water of Vidago, whether for treatment, especially the waters of Caldas de Chaves which springs with 73 ° C, with an unique composition on the Iberian Peninsula.
As would be expected, the benefits of their hot water were used by the Romans, important reason, among others, which led them to locate in this valley. Much importance acquired this urban core, at that time, which was elevated to a municipality, when the 79 year dominated Vespasian, first Caesar Family Flavia. Is this the origin of Aquae Flaviae, former name of the current city of Chaves. The imposing and preserved Roman bridge of Trajan, which once stood on the Bracara Asturica route, and the remains of the Roman Baths are the main tourist attractions of the city and the evidence of the importance of long ago.
The municipality of Chaves also has an important legacy of medieval times, due to the need to protect itself from foreign incursions and from the neighbor Spain. The various fortifications and the narrow streets of the historic center, with medieval features, allows travelers to take a trip in time.
Currently, Chaves has many sports facilities, particularly its municipal stadium, sports halls, their indoor and outdoor swimming pools, as well as green and leisure areas along the banks of Támega that contribute to the health of the population through physical activity, also offering alternative use of free time.
The municipality of Chaves has a clear strategy for traditional sports and games, which aim to:
Promotion and dissemination of traditional games for all age groups in the municipality;
Safeguarding and protection of the region's main traditional games;
Organizing meetings of traditional games;
Inclusion of popular games in the extracurricular activities of educational establishments.

In order to achieve these objectives, the Municipality of Chaves also has the support of local communities, in the promotion and dissemination of traditional games in northern Portugal region, such as the Frog Game, Game Mesh, Game of Pitcher, Racing Bags, Traction game, etc.
